History:
haha history
Toganou had met Kuroki and Juumonji and a very young age. It's unknown how, but the three had become really close and were inseparable. In elementary school, the three had bullied Sena into becoming their errand boy. As the three grew up, they became more delinquent, traveling around on Juumonji's vespa with baseball bats, causing trouble.
First year in high school, the three sent Sena on an errand, only to have Hiruma come and beat them up for it. Hiruma stripped them naked and took blackmail pictures. And with those pictures, Hiruma forced them to join the football club as linemen. He called the trio the Haha Brothers and gave them all only one locker. The trio wanted nothing to do with football and put no effort into it. The only time they actually applied themselves is during the "Tower of Hell", a challenge by Hiruma to climb the Tokyo Tower stairs. They wanted to beat Komusubi, who always seemed to be looking down on them.
They soon quit, no longer caring about the blackmail photos, but when they were beaten up by Banba, lineman for the Taiyou Sphinx, they returned to the team with the initiative of becoming good linemen. The match with Taiyou didn't go so well, and despite efforts, Toganou and Kuroki were completely trashed by a major sports magazine. The match against the NASA Aliens proved to be better for them, as the three began working together in matches. Toganou still wasn't entirely into the team and seemed to go along for the ride. He didn't quite have respect for his teammates and he didn't really have much motivation to play football.
When the team was about to return to Japan after their bout with the NASA Aliens, Hiruma offered a challenge called the Death March. The goal was to make it from Texas to Vegas on foot. It was a daunting task Toganou didn't want to make at first. Juumonji, however, was very determined to do it. He convinced Toganou and Kuroki that they could be good at this and to prove to that sports magazine that they weren't just delinquents. Sena revealing that he was actually Eyeshield 21 (and not the secretary) also helped inspire them to participate.
And so the death march began. The linemen had to push a big truck down the road (since they had no money and were out of gas). The Haha's rivalry with Komusubi pushed them to work harder. One night, Kuroki convinced Toganou to leave, as the two weren't necessarily motivated to stay, but after some strong words from Juumonji once again, telling them if Sena could change his image, so could they. They also learned that this would be Hiruma and Kurita's last chance to play for the Christmas bowl. Something changed in Toganou, and he became extremely dedicated to the team, striving to become an excellent lineman.
The Fall tournament soon arrived. Football became everything for Toganou. Instead of sleeping in class, he would discuss moves and techniques with the others. He came to practice and strove to be an excellent lineman and protect the team. The Fall tournament would prove very difficult. Each match seemed nearly impossible, resulting in a near complete loss of the tournament. (( Fall tournament overview )) In the end, however, Toganou helped secure the line and the Devilbats earned 3rd place in the tournament.
Next came the Kantou Tournament. This tournament would qualify the Devilbats for the Christmas Bowl. This tournament proved even more difficult for the team. Each team they fought was harder than the next, leaving Deimon trailing severely in the first half but catching up in the second. With dilligence and trickery, they managed to defeat three previously undefeated teams and advance to the Christmas bowl.
During the break between the Kanto and Christmas bowls, Toganou trained with Taiyo Sphinx lineman, Banba. The strongest of the Kanto teams came to help the Devilbats train, all with the purpose of getting the Devilbats to defeat the Teikoku Alexanders, a team that recruits the teams' aces by transferring them to their school. At first, Banba completely overwhelmed Toganou, but he persevered through all the training.
The Christmas bowl arrived on December 25 along with a lot of snow. Their opponents were Kansai's best: the Teikoku Alexanders. The match was grueling, but during the match, the players began to have blind faith in each other. And with that faith, the Devilbats took the win.
Next challenge was the World Cup, a competition among the all-star teams of each country. While Toganou competed to become part of the team, he wasn't selected. As the all-star team left, Agon offered him and several others the opportunity to sneak onto the roster as part of a clever underhanded scheme. And they all willingly accepted.
In America, Agon hid all the uniforms of the main team so the secondary team, the one Toganou was on, could play. Agon had planned for them to fail so that he could come in as the star player, but the plan backfired and the secondary team floored Team Russia.
While benched for the rest of the tournament, Toganou remained on the sidelines to support Team Japan. (full run-down of the tournament)
Appearance:
Toganou has long spiky blond hair (more than likely bleached) and always wears orange-tinted sunglasses. He's never seen without them, even wearing them indoors. They are usually rounded, but sometimes he wears different shapes. The reason for this is unknown, but he's seen tipping them down his nose to glare at idiocy a few times, so presumably this is more of a habit than a necessity.
Compared to his teammates, Toganou is average height, measuring in at 5'9. He is somewhat muscular, though its hard to tell as he tends to wear looser shirts. Fashion-wise he seems to like collared shirts, worn open with a t-shirt underneath (he even wears the school uniform like this) or buttoned Hawaiian shirts. In the winter he wears puffy coats, turtlenecks, and long scarves.
Toganou frowns a majority of the time, with the exception of playing football or being around teammates.
Personality:
At first glance, Toganou seems nothing more than an ill-tempered delinquent. His grades are just below average, noted as being 2/5 - 3/5 in the omake. His only good subjects are P.E. and art. And at the beginning of the manga, that's what he was. With Juumonji and Kuroki, the three picked on people, threatened them, and got Sena to do their bidding. They often rode around on Juumonji's vespa with baseball bats.
A lot changed after the Death March in America. While Toganou still comes across as a delinquent, his source of motivation and his initiatives changed completely. Toganou is thoroughly dedicated to his team and football. His goal changed to becoming a great lineman and helping bring the team victory. People soon began to see him as more than just some delinquent.
Toganou is extremely protective of his teammates, both on and off the field. If someone threatens his teammates, he's ready with a baseball bat to defend, specifically with Gao of the Hakushuu Dinosaurs. He hasn't beaten someone up with a baseball bat quite yet, but he wouldn't hesitate to do so if it came to it.
Despite his violent tendencies, Toganou is the more laid back of the three Haha brothers. He tends to stay in the background reading manga and generally goes with whatever Juumonji and Kuroki want. He has the longest fuse of the three, but that doesn't mean he isn't quick to anger or easy to irritate.
Toganou has some general violent tendencies. Toganou (usually in unison with Juumonji and Kuroki) have the habit of kicking people in the butt when they do a good job, a trait picked up from Hiruma. He is often verbally brash, as well, calling people by nicknames which aren't always nice, even for his own teammates. Most of the nicknames are the same as what Hiruma calls them. He calls his teammates bad names with a strangely positive light (as he fully supports all of them), but anyone else is met with a harsher tone, calling people names viciously or to annoy them. He rarely seems to call people by their real name, and when he does, he never uses honorifics. He shows no respect for his sempai, teachers, or even his elders. He treats everyone pretty much the same way, though with his teammates, it's extremely favorable.
Toganou has somewhat of an addiction to shounen manga. At the beginning he was never seen without it. He rode on Juumonji's vespa reading it, beat people up reading it, even snuck in a few pages during practice. When the Fall tournament came around (and after that), Toganou was more often seen without it as he was focusing all his initiative on winning the tournament and making it to the Christmas Bowl. Toganou no doubt still has many many issues of Shounen Jump, and reads it when he's not practicing. Toganou also seems to be the most versed in pop culture in the team, often making references to sci-fi, tv, and manga.
With his love of manga, Toganou is rather easy to convince that supernatural things are possible (either that or he's rather susceptible to Hiruma's deception). This seems to only happen in matters concerning Hiruma, however, as Toganou is thoroughly convinced that Hiruma is not human. He is shocked when Hiruma bleeds red blood and believes that Hiruma can replace his own bones after the quarterback had his arm broken.
Toganou's most unusual aspect of speaking is his tendency to say "HAAA?" when surprised or confused. With Juumonji and Kuroki, the three usually say HAA? in succession, becoming increasingly louder as each one says it. Toganou is the first one to start the sequence. This tendency earned the three the nickname of "Haha brothers". The three also have a tendency to complete each others sentences.
While generally Toganou stays in the background behind the other two Hahas, during the Kanto tournament and later, Toganou starts becoming more talkative, speaking alone and making stupid commentary, particularly when insulting Monta or Taki to egg them on. He remarks sarcastically, sometimes with at least one of the other Hahas, and lately, by himself too.
Abilities:
football techniques
One of Toganou's most noticeable ability is his art skills. He dreams of becoming a mangaka (manga artist) one day. His style of art is muscular and rough, resembling Fist of the North Star. It's unknown what his manga was about originally, though it involved people with supernatural powers (most borrowed from other Jump magazine characters). But after he became a dedicated member of the Devilbats, his manga was about football (though it still had a supernatural flair). The story followed a lineman named Shozo whose dream was to become #1 lineman. His team went up against teams of ninjas and people with stretchy arms.
Not really a talent, but Toganou has a strange ability to sleep through class. When he doesn't do that, he ignores class to discuss football strategies. He only really applies himself for art and football. When Doburoku compares daily activity charts, Toganou's three activities during the day are football, sleeping in class, and sleeping at home.
Other:
Nothing about his family is ever mentioned. It's unknown if he has siblings or what his parents are like.
SAMPLES
First Person:
[ Toganou is accustomed to technology enough that this network isn't really new to him. He isn't great with technology, but he's not like Shin, who will break tech simply by touching it.
However that isn't necessarily the reason why Toganou's frowning more harshly than normal. ]
If this is supposed to be some sort of paradise, why did I get a total idiot for a brother? His monkey wisdom makes less sense than the crap the Monkey spouts during a match. I think he's dumber than that idiot Taki.
[ there's some sort of loud noise off to the side, which immediately gets Toganou's attention. He looks over his orange glasses at whoever's offscreen. ]
Idiot brother! If you touch my manga I'll beat your face in!
Third Person: Class, class, class. Get kidnapped by some foreign force (probably magical) and somehow always end up in school. It was almost an eternal torment. Toganou frowned, staring out the window of the classroom, completely ignoring whatever lecture the teacher was babbling on about. He didn't really care about that, only football and art, and neither was happening right now.
He flipped a new page in his notebook, pulling out a pencil, and started sketching some frames. His current story was about a lineman named Shozo. His team was working towards the great goal of the Christmas Bowl, something that was amazing to experience, something he'd want to play in again.
The first frame he doodled the demon, the team's mastermind quarterback. A tall skinny guy with spiky hair and a little demon tail. He was an obvious analogy to Hiruma, as Toganou was constantly questioning if that guy really was a demon. He even referred to himself as a demon, which ultimately threw off Toganou every time. Even now, Toganou still wasn't sure if Hiruma was wholly human.
He began to draw the opponent, a chameleon-like guy with stretchy arms when he noticed several people had begun to stare at what he was doing, looking over his shoulder at his artwork. Class had ended without Toganou even noticing, leaving whoever straggled behind to stare at his work. "Haaa? The hell's your problem? Get lost!" he fussed.
